Top of Docks Can Save You Loads of $$$!

Posted on: February 6, 2012

Chrysler Syncreon had a problem – the trailers pulling into their docks were as much as 6 – 8” higher than the dock.  The Edge of Docks in place just weren’t solving the problem for two reasons – 1) they were only 6’ wide but the trailer openings were 8.5’ wide.  Full width access was necessary.  And 2) they were not long enough to compensate for the severe height difference.  The obstructed access was causing a great deal of damage to the dollies and racks.

Chrysler’s original plan was to pull out the 11 EODs, cut pits and install new wide access Jumbo levelers.  This would have cost them an estimated $500K.  Applied Handling’s value engineered solution was to install wide access Top of Docks directly over the EODs.  This gave full access to the trailer and extended the ramp into the trailer from 1′ to 10′ without making any costly changes to the building, which was the owner’s request.  This solution was fast and effective and the investment was much less expensive – approx. $157K.

How do I specify the proper capacity for a dock leveler?

Posted on: January 30, 2012

Great question!!!

The first thing you need to know is there are no “Dock Leveler Capacity Police”.  Manufacturers can use any rationale to put any capacity label on any dock leveler and no one gets fined or arrested.

Some leveler manufacturers decide capacity based on the unit’s ability to handle a static load placed on the platform without failure.  Some claim they are using a dynamic capacity system but then tell you to double the weight of lift truck and product to arrive at the proper leveler capacity.  Then, they provide a one year limited warranty or a 10 year prorated warranty.  Well, these options don’t offer any real value to the customer.

In 2007, ANSI adopted a test standard that is better than the previous methods because it requires actual testing with certification by a registered professional engineer.  The problem, however, is that this is only a “test standard” and does not take into account specific load requirements such as lift truck attachments or style of lift truck.  Plus, the test is expensive, so many are now just using “rational interpretation” instead of formal testing and there are no “Dock Leveler Capacity Police” to stop it.

If you want to buy a long lasting leveler specific to your needs, here’s what we suggest:

  • Identify a manufacturer that is financially sound and reputable, because a warranty is only as good as the company’s ability or desire to support it.
  • Share your specific needs with the manufacturer rep; such as equipment style, weight of product being loaded, any special lift truck attachments, frequency of use, etc.
  • Require the quote to include specific warranty information with a minimum 10 year non-prorated structural warranty based on the information you provided.

We hope this helps you when choosing your leveler!

Do you need to unload a trailer but you don’t have a dock or you need an additional dock?

The Impactable Dock Ramp has the flexibility of a mobile yard ramp with the stability of a permanent loading dock. It saves money over a concrete dock, has flexibility to change the dock height for any application and can move with the customer easily from a leased facility or seasonal business. This product is so unique that it is a Plant Engineering Magazine Finalist for Product or the Year.

The Impactable Dock Ramp’s structural design allows it to absorb trailer impact, thus allowing a fixed location and the utilization of Rite Hite vehicle restraints. It is available in 15k, 20k and 30k true rollover capacities and 7′, 8′ and 9′ widths with a wide variety of optional features such as a full 40′ shelter, stairs, hydraulic EOD’s and adjustable legs.

A Cool Option for Displaying Product

Posted on: January 9, 2012

A Harley Davidson Dealer in Virginia needed a way to display motorcycles in their 5 story building.  Pflow created a 3,000 lb. capacity, 6′ x 10′ carriage that transports bikes to each of the five upper-level display floors in a towering product showcase.

Located right next to the freeway, the owner wanted passing motorists to be able to see his dealership and what was inside and this was the perfect way to accomplish that.

Pflow is also making these display units for car dealerships.

Sealing the bottom (fourth side) of a dock opening

Posted on: December 19, 2011

Three-sided dock seal and shelter systems (dock enclosures) have been a “must have” product for over 60 years.  Without a properly designed enclosure, thousands of dollars of energy loss are seen at each dock per year.

How much energy is transferred on the fourth side of this opening (around the leveler lip and through the bottom front pit area)?  According to energy loss calculations using formulas supported by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), in most mid-westernU.S. cities, we are talking $800 – $1,000 per dock per year.

The PitMaster by Frommelt Industries addresses the challenge while working in harmony with the leveler to create reliability, robustness and low maintenance.  It also helps keep dock leveler pits clean while helping to eliminate dust and debris from entering your facility.  These units can be added to almost any existing loading dock with almost any type or brand of dock leveler.

If you have an energy initiative at your facility or you simply want to reduce your expenses, PitMasters are the “low hanging fruit”.  Most applications create enough savings to create a return on investment of 9-15 months.  So, spending $1000 per dock today could save you $10,000 in energy losses over a 10 year period (without even factoring the rising costs of energy).

What’s The Advantage of High Speed Fabric Doors?

Posted on: December 5, 2011

High Speed Fabric Doors were introduced as a main-stream product in the United States back in the early 80’s.  The original designs were somewhat maintenance intensive and offered value in very selective and specific applications.

Today, higher quality fabric doors are extremely low maintenance because they are designed to handle hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of cycles of use before replacement.  This translates to life spans of 10 – 20 years in active environments.  “Original designs” required the use of high maintenance components items such as bottom bars, coil cords and safety edges.  The higher quality offerings today eliminate these failure points through technological advances.  They also are designed to handle impacts from lift truck traffic without damage while re-feeding the curtain after impact.  This eliminates the need to trouble the already overworked maintenance personnel.

So, now that Fabric Doors are high speed, designed to take a hit and are low maintenance and reliable, where do customers utilize them?

The sweet spot for a fabric door includes any location within a plant environment that has a need to separate two environments from weather or contaminants.  For example, an active “traditional style” ramp door (moving at 8-12” per second) can be replaced with a fabric door (moving up to 100″ per second).  Depending on usage, an  ROI of 6 months to a year can be easily achieved on energy alone (not to mention productivity gains and maintenance cost reductions).

Other areas to consider are locations where door damage and maintenance is hurting your budget.  If you have a door getting hit or breaking springs, it is likely a great location to consider the benefits of a high speed fabric door.

High Volume / Low Speed (HVLS) Fans

Posted on: November 21, 2011

HVLS Fans have really become a facility “must have” since the concept was introduced a dozen years ago.  HVLS fans are large diameter (8′ – 24′) fans that move a huge amount of air (in excess of  400,000 cubic feet per minute).  In optimum applications, one fan can service an area up to 25,000 square feet.

In winter months, the temperature from floor to ceiling can easily vary by 20 – 30 degrees because heat rises.  HVLS Fans recapture the warm ceiling air and move it to the floor level where people are working.  Maximizing the effectiveness of heat produced lowers the amount of heat that is required, translating into major energy savings each month.  The return on investment (based on heat savings alone) can be as little as 6 – 12 months.

In summer months, HVLS fans are turned up to a higher speed in order to create a 2-3 mph gentle breeze across the employees.  This breeze creates a “wind chill effect” and makes the employee feel like the temperature is 7 – 11% cooler.  Comfortable employees are more productive employees. In fact, experts suggest that cooling employees to a comfortable level can increase productivity by 10-35%.

If your facility has a floor height of 18′ or higher, you should consider HVLS Fans.

Consider Modular Construction

Posted on: November 7, 2011

When walls or rooms are required within your facility, consider modular (pre-engineered) construction instead of traditional drywall or block.

Modular construction brings added value in the following areas:

• Quality control is higher because the fit and finish standards are set in a controlled manufacturing arena and not by outside contractors.
• Depreciation on modular construction is only 7 years vs. 30 years for conventional construction.
• Modular construction is faster, cleaner and less disruptive than traditional construction because  it requires more assembly than building.  A typical 16′ x 16′ modular can be assembled in less that two days.
• Modular construction can be engineered to create better sound control than traditional construction.
• You can take modular walls and buildings with you or easily modify them if your needs change because they are “modular”.

The next time you seek estimates for wall or office additions consider Applied Handling.

Do you know why a material lift may be a better deal for you than an elevator?

Posted on: October 24, 2011

Elevators fall under the highly scrutinized elevator code because they are designed to carry people as well as material.  Elevators codes also require a higher frequency of maintenance and more comprehensive maintenance by certified elevator technicians.

A Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor (or material lift) has a much lower initial installation cost and significantly less ongoing service and maintenance requirements.  They are also more robust in design.

So, if you need to move material vertically or that old freight elevator is “killing your budget”, think about replacement with a Pflow Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor.

Custom Doors…we do those!!!

Posted on: October 17, 2011

Here is a custom 37′ X 17′ door at a major food processing facility.  It replaced a large fabric door for three primary reasons:

• Is a better seal to reduce rodent infestation
• Has multiple windows for additional light
• Includes removable windows that allow screens to be inserted in the warmer months

This door also provides greater security and a higher insulating value than a fabric door.
